The amount of food your Biewer Terrier needs will vary depending on its age, activity levels, and health. But you should typically aim to feed your Biewer between 2 and 3% of its body weight in food each day. Remember, this includes wet food, dry food, treats, and scraps from the dinner table.

How much food does a Biewer Terrier need per day?

Recommended food intake for a Biewer Terrier

Biewer Terrier puppy food guide

Your Biewer Terrier puppy will generally become an adult around 9 months of age. Until this time, your Biewer puppy’s feeding needs will differ from the recommended food intake highlighted above.

Puppies grow up to 20 times faster than adult dogs, so need more calories to support their growth and development. Your young Biewer Terrier will need puppy food as it has the right balance of nutrients needed to give your Biewer the best start in life.

It’s best to feed your Biewer Terrier puppy between four and six times per day. Your Biewer’s mouth and stomach are very small at this age, so little and often is best. Aim to feed a total of 20 g per 1 kg of body weight per day.

Senior Biewer Terrier food guide

When a Biewer Terrier reaches 11 to 12 years of age, they become a senior. Most senior Biewers will naturally eat less than they did as an adult as they become less active.

You should still aim to feed your aging Biewer Terrier between 2 and 3% of its body weight daily. But you may find that your dog doesn’t eat it all up like he previously would have. This is fine as long as he’s still eating well.

However, if you do have any concerns about your Biewer Terrier’s weight or feeding habits, make sure you speak to your dog’s vet.

Can Biewer Terriers eat wet food?

Yes, Biewer Terriers can eat wet food. But, it’s important that you choose a good-quality wet food for your Biewer. In my experience, Biewer Terriers have sensitive stomachs. This is backed up by the American Kennel Club (AKC) which says that because of GI issues a low protein diet should be given.

You may also want to be careful with the amount of wet food that you offer your dog. Canned, wet food tends to increase plaque build-up on all dogs’ teeth. Biewer Terriers and other small breeds have such small mouths and teeth that they’re already prone to dental problems, such as plaque build-up. The good news is you can stay on top of this by using a dog plaque remover.

Can Biewer Terriers eat dry food?

Dried food is a great option for Biewers. In fact, it’s good for all dogs. Dry food, such as kibble, has to be chewed so it benefits the teeth and helps to prevent plaque.

In my experience, Biewer Terriers are messy eaters. Dry food is much nicer and easier to clean up than wet food, so it’s a win-win!

If your Biewer Terrier is like mine and has a sensitive stomach and GI issues, you’ll be pleased to know that there’s some good hypoallergenic dry dog food on the market. However, the brands available do seem to vary from country to country.

Both my Biewer Terrier and Yorkshire Terrier eat PRO PLAN VETERINARY DIETS HA Hypoallergenic Dry Dog Food. My Yorkie doesn’t have GI problems but he kept trying to steal these from by Biewer, so we just give them to him now too.

How often should a Biewer Terrier eat?

According to VCA Animal Hospitals, small breeds of dogs, including Biewer Terriers should be fed at least twice per day.

However, scientists argue against this. A 2022 study found that feeding a dog once per day results in better health. The researchers concluded that once daily feeding reduced the chances of dogs developing gastrointestinal, dental, orthopedic, kidney, urinary, liver, and pancreas disorders. They also had lower means in relation to cognitive dysfunction.

Important things to remember when feeding your Biewer Terrier

Any food you give your Biewer Terrier counts towards its calorie intake for the day. This includes:

  • Wet food
  • Dry food
  • Treats
  • Dinner table scraps
  • Fruit & veggies

So try not to overindulge your Biewer. It’s so easy to overfeed them by giving them a couple of treats here and there and a several pieces of carrot alongside their normal food, but this could lead to obesity and over health consquences.
