The coat colors of Biewer Terriers vary from black, gold, white, and blue. All Biewer Terriers will have any 3 of these colors on them.
One thing’s for certain about Biewer Terriers; they have one of the most stunning coat colors you’ll ever see. I get stopped so often when I’m out and about with my Biewer Terrier because people have never seen a dog with such amazing colours.
My Biewer Terrier is black, gold, and white. Buddy is predominately black and has a beautiful golden face. His legs and chest are white.
Most people who question me about Buddy have never heard of a Biewer Terrier. Some people think he’s a Yorkie, others think he’s a cross between a Yorkie and another small breed of dog, such as a Jack Russell. I must admit, I love educating others about Buddy’s heritage and telling them all about Biewer Terriers.
How Many Colors Are On A Biewer Terrier?
All Biewer Terriers should be tri-colored. This means they have 3 colors on them.
Every Biewer Terrier should have white on their coats. But the other two colors on their body will vary between black, gold, and blue.
What Coat Color Does A Biewer Terrier Have?
True Biewer Terriers will be classed as having one of the following coat colors (but remember, they’ll have solid white on them too):
- Black & Gold
- Black & Tan
- Blue & Gold
- Blue & Tan
Going by this list, my Biewer Terrier has black and gold coloring.
The United Kennel Club’s Stance
Biewer Terriers are a recent addition to the United Kennel Club’s (UKC) list of approved dog breeds. The UKC states that a Biewer Terrier must be tri-colored. However, they have strict criteria on where the coloring should and shouldn’t be.
They say that a Biewer Terrier’s coat should be as follows:
Head
A symmetrical combination of strong, solid white, blue/black, and gold/tan or blue/black and gold/tan, or white and gold/tan.
Chest, Neck & Chin
Any white on the chest should expand up to the neck and chin.
Topline
The topline of a dog stems from the top of its head to the base of its tail. The AKC says that there must be black and/or blue in this area.
Anal Opening
There should be a tan or gold trim around a Biewer’s anal opening.
When Is A Biewer Terrier Not A Biewer Terrier?
The AKC eliminates Biewer Terriers with the following ‘faults’:
- Patches of brown, gold, or tan hair on the body or legs.
- Solid color on the legs or feet which isn’t white.
- Albinism.
Don’t worry if your Biewer Terrier has one of these ‘faults’ (I hate that word by the way – there’s nothing wrong with our babies!) they’re still more than likely a Biewer Terrier.
As long as your Biewer is tri-color, then it’s a Biewer. A fault means your dog won’t be accepted by the AKC and you won’t be able to take part in AKC events with your pooch. This isn’t a problem if you want the love, fun, and happiness that comes with having a Biewer Terrier as a pet.
