Reducing the cost of keeping a Biewer Terrier
If the price of keeping a Biewer Terrier is making you worry, don’t panic! You may not need to pay for all of the items listed above. It’s also possible to the reduce the cost of looking after your pet dog. Here’s how:
Walk your Biewer yourself
According to the PDSA, small breeds of dogs, including Yorkies and Biewer Terriers need between 30 and 40 minutes of exercise per day. Rather than paying a dog walker to walk your dog, do the job yourself.
In the US, the average of cost of a 30 minute dog walk is $24.84, so you can save yourself a lot of money by going for a stroll with your Biewer Terrier instead.
Take advantage of the work from home culture
Since the pandemic, the number of people who work from home has risen. 60% of people now say they have flexible working arrangements which means they can work from home a few days a week or adjust their working hours to suit their needs.
Check to see if you have these options so that you can reduce the number of hours/days that your Biewer Terrier needs a dog sitter.
Train your Biewer Terrier yourself
Now, I’m not going to pretend that Biewer Terriers are an easy breed to train, because they’re not. But, mine is certainly a lot easier to train than my Yorkie. With a little time, patience, and some expert dog training tips, you can teach your Biewer Terrier the basics.
Groom your dog yourself
The beautiful fur on a Biewer Terrier needs a lot of grooming, including daily brushing, which shouldn’t take up too much of your time. Many Biewer Terrier owners let their dog’s hair grow long. But an alternative style, which I prefer, is the ‘puppy cut’.
You can pay to have your Biewer Terrier’s coat cut. But you can save yourself around $40 a time by doing the job yourself.
I cut both my Biewer Terrier’s hair and my Yorkie’s hair myself. And, my Biewer Terrier is a lot more chilled out about having his hair done than my Yorkie is.
Simply, invest in good-quality clippers and scissors and they’ll soon pay for themselves.
Other costs to consider when buying a Biewer Terrier
Purchase price
First of all, there’s the initial price of a Biewer Terrier to consider. I’ve got a whole post on this. But, in general, in the US, expect to pay upwards of $2,500 for a Biewer. In the UK, Biewer Terriers usually go on sale from £800 upwards.
Sickness/accidents
There’s not just the purchase price of a Biewer Terrier to think about. If your dog gets sick or has a serious accident, you’ll have to pay the excess on your pet insurance as a minimum.
It’s worth looking in depth at insurance policies for Biewer Terriers and ensure the one you choose covers as much as possible. Often, pre-existing conditions aren’t covered. This is a problem, I’ve had.
Buddy has ongoing GI issues and his insurers don’t cover him for anything related to this. As a result, we’ve paid more than £1000 in vet bills in just a few months! GI issues in Biewer Terriers are common, so this is something to bear in mind when shopping for pet insurance.
Great information!
