Biewer Terriers are a friendly breed of dog. They generally get on well with their owners, children, as well as other pets, including cats and dogs.
Biewer Terrier’s temperment
To find out whether Biewer Terriers are friendly, we first need to consider their temperament.
As an owner of a Biewer Terrier, I describe them as being loyal, playful, funny, stubborn, and affectionate.
So why have I chosen these 5 words to describe Biewer Terriers?
My Biewer is loyal because he’s always there. If I’m upset or in pain, he’s the first one by my side. In fact, he’s always by my side or my feet. Buddy is also playful. Despite the fact that he’s now classed as a senior (shh, don’t tell him that!) he still acts like a puppy. He has so much energy and always wants to play. There’s always a toy in his mouth waiting for me to throw.
Funny is a good word to describe a Biewer Terrier. Buddy makes a noise that sounds like a laugh when funny things happen. He also chases his own tail, takes on birds in the garden (he never wins) and is generally a bit crazy. But I wouldn’t have him any other way.
Now my Biewer is stubborn because he won’t go outside for a wee or poop if the weather’s bad or he simply doesn’t want to. Hey, that’s what the kitchen floor is for, right? And if there’s a puppy pad down for him to use, he’ll use it if he feels like it, but no one’s gonna make him!
The final word I use to describe Biewer Terriers is affectionate. My Biewer Terrier loves nothing more than a fuss. Kisses and cuddles are a must whenever he wants them and snuggle time is every evening.
Are Biewer Terriers friendly with their owners?
In my experience, Biewer Terriers are extremely affectionate with their owners. My Biewer is much more loving and affectionate with us than my Yorkie is.
He’s a proper lap dog and a real protector. If he thinks something is amiss or someone is suspicious, he’ll protect me with his life.
There’s no need to worry about my Biewer biting me or getting aggressive with me – it just doesn’t happen. Buddy is the friendliest dog around.
Do Biewer Terriers like strangers?
If you’re the postman or a grocery delivery person then no, my Biewer Terrier doesn’t like you. And, if you come at him while he’s on a walk, he doesn’t want you to stroke him either. But that doesn’t mean he doesn’t like you.
After the initial barking and sniffing phase, my Biewer Terrier will, without doubt, cuddle up to you and show you his tummy. And you MUST tickle it.
Are Biewer Terriers good with children?
In my experience, Biewer Terriers are good with children. Buddy may growl at a child when they annoy him, but he’s never gone for them. He’s much more likely to want to play with them.
When Buddy was a young dog, we did have problems with him running off with the kids’ toys and chewing them. Unfortunately, George Pig lost his arm as a result! But now that he’s older, he’s not as interested in the kids’ toys.
And now that the kids are older, he loves to snuggle in their bedrooms with them. He’s even ditched sleeping with us some nights to stay with them!
Are Biewer Terriers friendly with other dogs?
Biewer Terriers and other dogs can get on well. My Biewer Terrier lives with a Yorkie without any problems. He’s also friends with a couple of other dogs that are a similar size as him.
When we’re on walks, he does growl at a lot of other dogs, though. But this isn’t necessarily a Biewer thing. I noticed that this started after I had a baby. Even now, years later, he’s more likely to growl at another dog when the kids are with us than when they’re not. So, I’m sure it’s a protection thing.
Can Biewer Terriers get on with cats?
Some Biewer Terriers see cats as a problem they’ve got to chase away. Others couldn’t care less about their presence. Then, there’s the Biewer Terriers that make friends with cats.
Buddy definitely doesn’t fit into that category. Again, it completely depends on the cat. If it’s a cat in our garden, he’s not having it and he’ll chase it away. But a cat at a relative’s house, he’ll accept.
Are Biewer Terriers friendly?
As you can see Biewer Terriers are a friendly breed of dog that are unlikely to cause you much trouble. A Biewer’s temperament and their loving nature makes their great pets.
