Yes, Biewer Terriers and cats can live together. But care must be taken when first introducing the two to each other.

Cats and dogs are two of the most popular pets. So, it makes sense to want the two to live together. 44% of US homes have more than one type of pet, according to the American Veterinary Association, so it’s certainly possible to keep Biewer Terriers and cats together.

Are Biewer Terriers good with cats?

Biewer Terriers have some amazing characteristics and traits, including being:

  • Friendly
  • Loving
  • Energetic
  • Playful
  • Affectionate
  • Outgoing
  • Loyal
  • Charismatic

Due to these characteristics, a Biewer Terrier can make a good play mate for a cat.

Biewer Terriers also get on well with cats as they’re a similar size. The average weight of a cat if between 4 and 5 kg, while a Biewer Terrier weighs in at between 2 and 4 kg on average. Although, this isn’t always the case as my Biewer Terrier weighs 5.5 kg (he isn’t overweight).

This similar size is good for ensuring your dog and cat get along as it means they’re on the same page and neither one has the upper hand.

Can a Biewer Terrier and a cat live together?

Biewer Terriers and cats can live together. I haven’t done it myself, although my Biewer Terrier and Yorkie have lived with my parents and their two cats for a week on a couple of occasions while I’ve been away.

The result of these weeks was interesting. My parents have one cat that won’t put up with anything – she really is the boss of the house. And my dogs know this. They don’t try anything on with her. Their other cat runs away and hides from my dogs, despite him being a large Tom cat. My dogs certainly smell his fear and chase him.

Introducing your Biewer Terrier to your cat

Let’s say you’ve got a Biewer Terrier and you want to introduce a cat into your household. How do you go about it?

Well, first of all you need to find the right cat. If you’re planning on getting a cat from a shelter, get as many details as you can from them. Ideally, look for a cat that’s lived with a dog before.

If your Biewer is a puppy then getting a kitten could work well as they’ll both be playful together. Adding a kitten into a home with a older Biewer Terrier is unlikely to go down well as your dog will more than likely get annoyed with the kitty.

But what about if you already have a cat and want to get a Biewer Terrier?

You must ensure that your cat will tolerate a dog coming into your home. If you’re not sure about this, invite a friend or neighbor over with their pooch to see how your cat reacts.

Keep the introduction short

Whichever animal is being introduced to the home needs time to investigate and get used to their new digs. Your other pet should be out of the way while this happens.

For example, if you’re introducing a cat to your home and already have a Biewer, I recommend that someone takes your Biewer out for a walk when the cat first comes home.

It’s worth keeping your Biewer on a lead or holding him/her when you first introduce him/her to your cat too. Make sure your cat has room to run away or a place to hide should it feel nervous or frightened when it comes to face to face with your Biewer for the first time.

Closely supervise

A Biewer Terrier and a cat can be unpredictable when first put together. Neither of them are unlikely to mean any harm, but it’s not worth the risk.

Experts say that it can take up to a couple of months for a dog and a cat to properly get used to each other. For this reason, closely supervise both your pets for as long as possible. If you go out and leave them both at home, don’t leave them together until you’re sure they’re firm friends.

Don’t expect a bond to form straight away

As already mentioned it can take a long time for a Biewer Terrier and a cat to get along with each other. In fact, they may never become friends. There’s a possibility that they’ll ignore each other and just tolerate each other. This isn’t a bad thing, but you may not ever get a snuggly photo of the two of them together!

Keeping your dog and cat happy

Once your cat and Biewer are living under the same roof, you need to make sure that the situation is harmonious. Although it’s nice to think of your cat and dog snuggling up to sleep together, this is unlikely to happen.

Remember, your Biewer and your cat are individuals and they need their own belongings, including:
